Oregon Manifest

The Oregon Manifest presents bicycle frame builders with the challenge of designing the best utility bicycle. These designs range from large cargo bikes that carry heavy loads to lighter bikes suited for the challenges of urban commuting.

Our frame-building friend, Renold Yip, of YiPsan Bicycles, has submitted this offering (above). Some of you may recognize it as a sister bike to Danielle's award-winning Sunflower bike. As always Renold's bike is an impressive machine. Some highlights on this one include the integrated cable lock and the custom chain guard.

2 1/2 months before we bid this fine shopping center adieu some little punk decides to smash in our window. Thanks to some kind street sweepers the guy was scared off very quickly and left the scene before he/she stole anything (that I can tell anyway). The police were fast to respond and great to deal with. At the end of the day we were left with a mess and sleepless night. It could be worse.

Description: The Town of Emmitsburg has started construction on a stacked loop trail network. This will become the newest singletrack in Frederick County. 75% of the Beginner Trail's corridor has been cleared and the goal is to finish this work and begin shaping the tread on Saturday, August 27, 2011.

In time, this trail system should boast in excess of 20 miles of diverse single track, on terrain comparable to the Frederick Watershed AND Schaeffers Farm. The Town of Emmitsburg has also approved the design Intermediate and Advanced Trails. Upon the completion of the Beginner Trail they will be built.

Join us Saturday for a great morning of trail building followed by a BBQ in Community Park.

The Frederick Bicycle Coalition is proud to host Frederick’s Second Annual Ride with the Mayor event. Mayor McClement will join us as we ride from the gazebo behind the William Talley Recreation Center to the Harry Grove Stadium to watch the Frederick Keys take on the Potomac Nationals. All participants will receive a free general admission ticket to the game! All ages are welcome; however, we ask that children under the age of six either ride in a trailer or in a tow behind bicycle. Registration will begin at 12:45pm and we will leave for the stadium at 1pm. Come out and join us!!!!

Tour de Frederick 2011

The Tour de Frederick went off with a bang (and a few rain drops). Pictured is a happy group of riders, and Tom's crazy save-the-day Down Tube shifter fix.

The bike pictured's shifter mount had debonded from the frame. I could not let this rider's event end this way! So with a little Gorilla Glue, safety wire and clear electrical tape (yes, clear!) the bike was good as.... well it was rideable!

In other news a certain someone hogged all the peanut butter.

New Trails are COMING please HELP!!!

New trails are getting built in Emmitsburg, MD and they need your help! Corridor clearing will be taking place August 13th and they are hoping for a good turn out to show their town council there’s excitement for the project. The complete project will be a stacked loop system and they’ll be breaking ground on the first piece of a multi-phase project.

Where is Emmitsburg? It is north of Frederick, MD and the trails will be built on the town reservoir property which is situated on the same ridge as Gambrill and the Frederick Watershed so expect similar terrain. This bike was an absolute joy to work on. It is high function and high style just like I like it.

The segmented fork was built by Andrew Watson and features Cherry wood caps on the top of the fork. Arne let me play a bit with the aesthetics so I surprised him with a cherry top cap and bar plugs that I turned in our off site machine shop (aka granddad's garage). The QBall frame was made by Scott Quiring of Quiring Cycles.

Back by popular demand, the National MS Society’s Maryland and Central Pennsylvania Chapters are pleased to offer you the second annual Bike MS: Mason-Dixon Challenge! Are you up for the challenge?

Join us in Gettysburg, PA at Gettysburg College on July 16th for a great day of cycling through scenic northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. Three route lengths are available: 30, 62.5 and 100 miles. All routes start and finish at Gettysburg College and participants can expect great route support, well-stocked rest stops and plenty of camaraderie along the way.

Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided. Upon completion of the route, cyclists will enjoy finish line festivities to celebrate a great day of cycling and raising awareness of MS.

CARROLL CREEK ROTARY - BIKE DRIVE 4/9

It may not be worth much to you but it can make a huge difference in the lives of the working poor in developing countries. Instead of letting it sit there and collect more dust, please consider bringing that bike to McCurdy Field in Frederick on April 9^th between 9AM until 1PM. The event will be held rain or shine.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Carroll Creek Rotary Club is sponsoring a bike collection on behalf of Bikes for the World. Bikes for the World is an Arlington, VA based non-profit organization that will take these bikes and ship them overseas to developing countries where they can make a huge difference in the lives of the working poor. In addition to the bikes sent overseas, we will also be collecting 20 bikes to give to the Boys & Girls Club right here in Frederick.

A donation of $10 per bike is requested in order to help defray shipping costs. This cash donation along with the value of the bikes donated is tax-deductible and receipts will be issued.

GIANT INTRODUCES XTC COMPOSITE 29ER MOUNTAIN BIKE

Following last year’s successful launch of the Anthem X 29er full-suspension XC bike, Giant is introducing an all-new 29er bike for competitive XC racing and riding: the XtC Composite 29er.

Developed with input from Giant Factory Team Off-Road Team rider Carl Decker, the XtC Composite 29er is a hardtail featuring a host of innovative technologies that sets it apart from the competition. One look at the radically engineered Composite frameset reveals some innovative new thinking in the quest to produce a lightweight, race-ready, 29-inch-wheel hardtail.

“Riders told us they wanted a lightweight 29er that addresses some of the weaknesses people usually associate with 29-inch-wheel bikes,” said Giant Global Off-Road Category Manager Kevin Dana. “With our experience and capabilities in composite engineering, Giant has been able to come up with some unique design solutions to best meet those demands.”

The massive MegaDrive downtube reveals one of the frame’s most distinctive features: asymmetrical design. The tube itself is offset to in order to maximize stiffness, especially in the bottom bracket area, which uses Giant’s PowerCore technology for maximum pedaling efficiency. Press-fit bottom bracket cups minimize weight, and extra-wide chainstays, which are also asymmetrically shaped, provide optimal power transfer and ample rear tire clearance.

The XtC Composite 29er frameset also incorporates Giant’s OverDrive tapered headtube (1 1/8-inch top, 1 ½-inch bottom) for front-end stiffness and sharp steering. Together, all of these features result in a frame that’s light and stiff enough to race but with improved vertical compliance and handling characteristics that make it ideal for technical XC trails and marathon distances.

“I went to Giant with some of the things I wanted improved that have historically been weaknesses of 29ers,” said Decker, who won the Downieville All-Mountain World Championship last year on Giant’s Anthem X 29er full-suspension bike. “I wanted precise steering. I wanted it to be stiff in the bottom bracket and to accelerate with tenacity. I asked for a better race bike, and Giant came through.”

Specialized Venge

HOW IS THE VENGE DIFFERENT THAN A TARMAC OR A ROUBAIX?

The Tarmac is designed to be the stiffness to weight leader to deliver advantages climbing, cornering and accelerating during all out sprints. The tube profiles and lay-up are optimized to maximize torsional stiffness to resist the twisting forces experienced by the bike during hard cornering and out of the saddle efforts, allowing riders to take the tightest lines while descending and get the jump on the competition during sprints. In competitive situations, the rougher the road the faster the Roubaix gets, thanks to its longer wheelbase and industry leading vertical compliance. It is designed for stable handling over any road surface and to provide some isolation for the rider from fatigue inducing vibration.

The Venge is designed to offer complete performance, which requires a careful balance of low weight, high torsional stiffness and aerodynamic advantage. Adding aerodynamic features, such as an aero downtube, typically results in a noticeable decrease in stiffness and an increase in weight. Using clever tube shaping and an incredibly precise lay-up schedule our engineers were able to combine the handling characteristics you expect from a Specialized in a 2179 gram frame module, with an aerodynamic design. The result is an entirely new category for riders looking for advantages in every situation.

HOW DO YOU ADD STIFFNESS TO AN AERO DESIGN?
The Venge features our most advanced frame construction method: FACT IS 11R. This design combines the chainstays and bottom bracket together in one large monocoque section for direct power transfer from the pedals to the rear wheel. The front end combines the top tube, head tube and down tube together as one piece to resist twisting forces for sharp handling at high speed.

The seat stays use the triangulated design first developed while working with Tom Boonen on the Tarmac SL2 to maximize rear triangle stiffness. You can see stiffness charts comparing the Venge to the competition under the photos tab above.

Finally, an integrated front end with a tapered 1 1/8" to 1 3/8" head tube builds stiffness into the fork and tube junctions for nimble handling.

WHAT MAKES IT AERODYNAMIC?
Like the Shiv, the Venge is designed to perform best in crosswind situations; specifically at yaw angles of around 15 degrees, since it is much more common to encounter these conditions than a straight on headwind. With a bike designed for road racing it's also important to consider that most riders will be mounting two water bottles in the front triangle. The down tube profile is widest near the center of the tube, instead of a traditional tear drop shape, because it actually minimizes the low pressure wake behind the tube better in crosswinds.

During multiple trips to the windtunnel our engineers realized that the seatstays represent a significant amount of drag when presented with wind from the side, so the Venge features Cambered Airfoil X-Section seatstays that camber the leading edge of the seatstays out to present the smallest profile to the wind, minimizing turbulance. The cross section resembles an airplane wing, with one side flat and the other curved, to smooth airflow around the spinning rear wheel.

Finally, the front profile has been minimized with the tapered headtube and a special FACT Carbon 3:1 Airfoil fork with noticeably narrow stance fork blades. An integrated aero spacer optimizes airflow from the steerer to the top tube while maintaining great strength and stiffness for great steering. The Venge also features internal cable routing.

HOW MUCH FASTER WILL IT MAKE ME?
During tests performed by Specialized's Director of Advanced R&D, Chris D'Alusio, we found that the Venge saved 20 watts at 40kph during indoor velodrome testing when compared to the Tarmac SL3. This means that the rider can either use less energy or go 1kph faster with the same effort. In a full sprint situation, the aero savings of the Venge can result in more than a bike length over 200 meters. Because the design is optimized for crosswinds, actual performance on the road can be even more significant.

Of course, most of the time riders benefit from drafting during road races, so the Venge was actually tested in drafting situations staged in the windtunnel to see if the benefits were significant. Our results show that though the total drag while in the draft is considerably less, the percentage of power saved on a Venge is the same as when the bike is measured alone. That means that even sprinters hiding in the draft are saving valuable energy. See charts comparing the Venge to it's competition under the photos tab above.

WHAT ABOUT THAT AERO SEATPOST?
The Reversible/Adjustable Carbon Seatpost has 10mm of setback built in that when combined with 10mm of offset provided by the frame can create either 20mm or 0mm of setback. This provides a great aerodynamic shape plus a wide range of adjustability - without the need for cutting the seatpost or dealing with a seatmast during travel.

WHAT MODELS ARE AVAILABLE?
The Venge is only available at the S-Works level. You can get it in either SRAM or Shimano trim, or build up a frameset with parts of your choice.

WHAT DOES THE VENGE HAVE TO DO WITH FORMULA ONE?
After the S-Works Venge design was in the final stages of development, McLaren Racing approached Specialized about the possibility of collaborating on a bike project. Our engineers decided to challenge them with further optimizing the Venge to try to hit weight targets on par with typical competitive road platforms. Through this project (which is still ongoing) our engineers have benefited from McLaren's incredible processes and attention to detail during lay-up that is required when building cars that pull 5G's in a corner.

McLaren's input has resulted in a unique lay-up that uses more pieces of smaller, specific carbon plys, placed in an ultra precise manner. It takes 22 hours of hand labor to lay-up the latest prototype version. A super limited number of McLaren special edition bikes will be available later in the year. Expect them to cost about twice as much as the current S-Works version.

Naked. always has an impressive booth at NAHBS. The show stopper from naked. this year is the totally clean looking city bike. Axle nuts, seat binder bolts etc. were all concealed for a totally clean stripped down look. The finish was done by racking a torch across the raw steel before clear coating the frame.

The 2011 North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) has arrived. I would like to start The Bicycle Escape’s coverage of the event with my new ride, the pictured YiPsan cruiser.

Some of you may remember the YiPsan Sunflower bike that won the “People’s Choice Award” and “Best City Bike” at the 2010 North American Handmade Bicycle Show. Well that beauty belonged to my beauty (aka wife Danielle). At the time the bike was being designed there was discussion of a dude’s version of the now famous cruiser. NAHBS 2011 offered the perfect excuse for such a bike to become a reality.

The design of the bike is function forward. Racks, generator lights, fenders, a bell, and a kickstand adorn the machine. To say it is functional is not to overlook the bikes beauty. The paint was done by the skilled hand of Keith Anderson. His flawless finish is complimented by lots of high-polished bits and pieces. When polished parts were not available (they usually were not) we had them polished. The rims for example started out as a nice silvery/grey color but it was not shiny enough for this build. We could do better. The kickstand, brake lever blades, crank, ring, fenders, and Shimano Alfine rear hub all received the same treatment. We even replaced the kickstand and brake lever pivot pins with pins made of brass. So yeah, I am kinda worked-up about this bike.

One of the original motivating forces behind this bike was the transforming front rack. I wanted a porteur style front rack that could transform into a small randonneur rack. After discussing this idea with Renold Yip at YiPsan Bicycles he took the idea a step further. He designed and built a rack platform with removable left and right sides. With the sides removed you are left with a small front rack. The sides can then be installed on the fork forming a low-rider rack to accommodate side bags.

I am really pleased with the way this bike came together and am super excited to see my bike displayed alongside the best our industry has to offer. Stay tuned for more posts from Austin.

Oh, I almost forgot. The Chinese writing on the seat tube reads: "The Bicycle Escape"

I Just Customized a Kickstand!

This very special kickstand will grace my YiPsan hybrid which will be displayed at the 2011 NAHBS.

I customized this Greenfield kickstand by filing off graduations, wording and as many of the imperfections as possible. Next up it was polished and just for fun I replaced the alloy pin with one made of brass.

If you are going to NAHBS this year keep an eye out for my bike and while your at it why not vote for it :)

Adopt a Road

Dear devoted FBC supporters. We know it’s winter and we know hunting season is finally over, but we could really use your help with cleaning up our adopted mile of Rt 40 (Kehne Rd. to Gambrill Park Rd) on Saturday, January 29th and Sunday January 30th. Here’s the break down:

Date: Saturday, January 29th & Sunday, January 30th

Time: 10am – noon

What: pickn’ up trash

What to bring: dress warm, wear bright colors and bring your work gloves

Where to meet: We will meet at the intersection of Kehne and Rout 40. (click below map to enlarge)

Riding?Don’t have a lock? Don’t worry, there will be enough of us there with locks to make due.

Driving? There should be enough room along the shoulder for parking, but think about carpooling if possible!

Food and Brew for a Cause

On January 4th, 2011 we will be having a Frederick Bicycle Coalition event at Brewers Alley in downtown Frederick. All day long, 20 percent of your food/bar bill will be donated to FBC. So visit Brewers Alley for some great food and beer and help support Frederick biking at the same time.

Plenty of bikers and FBC board members will be there in the evening, so come on out and introduce yourself, enjoy some great food and beer and help support the Frederick Bicycle Coalition.

We at The Bicycle Escape have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our friends and customers this year. The amazing clock shown was a gift made by an artist in Bogota, Columbia and is constructed of recycled metal. I could not believe it when this was delivered to the shop. Pile on some delicious homemade pupusas, gourmet deserts, fresh fruit, and some very good craft beer and you've got yourself a truly touched collection of bicycleman. Bicycle Advisory Committee Ride

More wonderful signs that Frederick continues to move to improve bicycle accessibility.

Yesterday the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee took a ride downtown to identify problem areas as well as investigate using bicycles as a way of touring Frederick's many historical sights. The formation of the Advisory Committee is one of many examples of Frederick's ambition toward becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community. These efforts are being spearheaded by the Frederick Bicycle Coalition (FBC). If this goal is as important to you as it is to us, support the cause by becoming a member of FBC.

Busy Weekend

This weekend was a busy one. Saturday was packed with friends, food, bikes and home-brew. Thanks to the host Steve who worked hard to put the event together, everyone had a blissful time.

Sunday The Bicycle Escape crew volunteered to support the first annual Ten Mile Race to benefit the Frederick YMCA. This also proved to be a great way to spend a morning. There were over 250 friendly runners keeping fit for a great cause.

Gambrill Night Mountain Bike Rides Return

The Bicycle Escape, in conjunction with M.O.R.E., is hosting night mountain bike rides at Gambrill State Park on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month through the end of April.

Gambrill offers some of the most technical terrain in the region so these rides are for experienced mountain bikers only. It is also necessary to have a high quality lighting system. These are specialty, high powered lights with a minimum output of 10 watts or greater. Safe and properly functioning equipment is required by all riders. Helmets will be required to be worn by all riders at all times.

The ride will leave from the main trailhead parking lot located off of Gambrill Park Road. The parking is on the right as you climb the mountain, if you reach an intersection at the top of the mountain, you have gone too far.

Rides will leave from the parking area at 7 pm sharp and will last approximately 2 hours. Please allow enough time upon your arrival to sign-in, prepare yourself for the ride and be ready to hit the trail on time. Liability waivers must be signed by all riders and parking passes will be issued for each vehicle. We are in the park with special permission so these parking passes must be displayed on all vehicles! We must be out of the park by 10 pm.

Pace for the rides will be moderately fast. Speed is not as important as technical riding ability.

Because this ride exists with special permission from the Department of Natural Resources riders must follow the guidelines below in order to participate.

The group must stay together at all times
Keep noise to a minimum
Do not disturb wildlife
Respect park rules
Follow the guidelines set forth by Tread Lightly

Moots comes to Frederick Maryland!

The Bicycle Escape is more then excited to welcome Moots into the TBE family of handmade frame offerings. Moots has been building beautiful Titanium frames in Colorado since 1981. The frame pictured is the 10 year anniversary YBB mountain bike frame. The bike has a pivot-less rear suspension system and accommodates 29" wheels. I think this will be my next bike.

Wild Goose Chase

This past Sunday was the Wild Goose Chase bike ride in Cambridge, MD. It is the first year I have done this ride. I went with my Single Speed Outlaw buddy, Maili and together we rode 25.2 miles. It was a beautiful and fun day. My Yipsan sunflower bike did great and attracted a lot of attention.

Schwinn Re-Birth

This was a fun project. The old Schwinn American Deluxe was rustier than an old grill. Our orders were to restore it with out doing any re-chromeing or paint work. We were quite pleased with the results. The chrome brightened up really nice and we fixed both the front light and the electric horn. The only parts we replaced were the tires and the damaged pedals.

FBC Fall BBQ and Picnic

Join the Frederick Bicycle Coalition for our first annual Fall Picnic and Bike Rides taking place on Sunday, October 10, 2010. The picnic will take place at Cunningham Falls State Park in the large pavilion in the Manor area. The road rides will leave from the same location, the mountain bike rides will start at the Sand Flats Parking area of the Frederick Watershed.

FBC will provide burgers and hot dogs (veggie versions too). You bring a potluck dish to share. We’ll have some adult beverages as well.

The picnic is rain or shine, check the web site for ride information if the weather looks questionable.

About the rides:
Helmets required. The rides will start at 9am. Road rides will leave from the picnic area. Phil VanWerkhoven will lead a road ride doing rolling hills and covered bridges which will cover around 35 miles at a moderate pace. James Johnson will lead a ride up the mountain and on some of the nearby dirt roads, 25-30 miles at a relaxed pace.

The mountain bike rides will consist of two moderate rides, one will be a women’s only ride and the other will be open to all. The terrain ranges from smooth to rocky and technical with some decent climbs. The start location is approximately 7 miles from the picnic location. Following the ride we’ll head over to Cunningham Falls.

All rides will return in time for the picnic start.

It is no secret that steel is a durable material, but even frames built of steel occasionally brake.

This old LeMond bicycle gave up the ghost after thousands and thousands of miles.

You may not know however one of the cool things about steel frames is that they are often repairable. This LeMond was given a second chance by Renold Yip of YiPsan Bicycles.

Frederick Bicycle Coalition plans ride to 'Sunday Funday' Keys game

Although not quite a year old, The Frederick Bicycle Coalition, a nonprofit Frederick County bicycle advocacy organization, is on track and keeping pace to reach its objectives.

"Our real focus is to improve in cycyling in Frederick ... for recreation and transportation. To make it a safe, viable option," said Anna Kelso, treasurer of the coalition.

Another goal is to help Frederick become a recognized bicycle community by the League of American Bicyclists, she added, and the group is working with the mayor and board of alderman to achieve this designation and to establish a bicycle advisory committee.

"People perceive bicycling to be more dangerous than it is," Kelso said, and "we really want to drive home the point that (bicycling) is something you can do" anytime.

The coalition has organized a family friendly ride to the Frederick Keys game Sunday, departing from the Baker Park bell tower at 12:45 p.m.--

Kelso said Frederick City Mayor Randy McClement will lead the group to Grove Stadium, where he will also throw out the first pitch.

Free general admission will be provided to all participants courtesy of The Frederick Keys. The 1.2-mile ride will take place on an established, low traffic route with experienced cyclists escorting the group and a police presence to help with directing traffic. --

In addition to the bicycle ride, the game is scheduled as a "Sunday Funday" event, where kids can meet the Keys players prior to the game.

Participants should bring a helmet, a bicycle lock and will be required to sign a release waiver.

What is Custom?

The term custom is thrown around quite a bit in the bicycle industry. Sometimes it describes a stock bike frame with a hand-picked parts assortment. To others a custom bike is one with custom geometry and tubes designed to best suit a specific persons needs.

The YiPsan pictured is a wonderful example of what a truly custom bike can be. Each and every detail of this machine is tailored to one rider's desires. His name is Dan and his goal was to own a bike that is comfortable for long rides and built tough to tackle foul weather and averse conditions.

The bike began with custom geometry (as you can tell Dan is very tall) and extra heavy duty frame tubes. Next a selection of parts were identified to suit the rider's needs. The bike was equipped with the bomb proof Rohloff 14 speed internally geared Speedhub. To accommodate the twist shifter required for this drive-train Renold at YiPsan Bicycles made a special stem with a shifter mount. The bike is also equipped with a Schmidt Dynamo/SON generator front hub to power both the front and rear light. Fenders, a Nitto front rack and Tubus rear round-out the build. This machine is not limited to the road, the 40mm tires and stout wheels will be right at home on dirt and gravel roads.

This bike is one mans dream and perfectly illustrates what a custom bike can be.

I was quite pleased with the way our most recent YiPsan build. Steel tubes and components kept the weight down to 18.5lbs with custom frame, fork, post, and stem. Keep your eyes open for this beauty around Maryland and on the tri circuit. There is a 'ghost pearl panel' on the downtube that looks really good. If only I were a better photographer you could see it too :)

Bike Taxis in Downtown Frederick

Have you seen the cool bike taxis rolling around downtown Frederick lately? They are so cool. Geo and I took our first ride in one last week and it was fun! It is such a great idea to have these in the city. It was a beautiful, sunny day so we were able to enjoy the weather and get to the our restaurant in no time at all. The driver was really friendly. He said he has been busy pedaling people all over town. If you ever need to get somewhere downtown quick or if you just want to enjoy the evening air, consider hopping on one of these bike taxis. All you have to do is text your location to the number below and they will pick you up!

Bike maintenance, including fixing flats and cleaning chains is covered in second session Final class will be on handling techniques such as shifting, braking and traffic control.. Bicycles and helmets required for all classes.
